WHAT IS COMPOSTING

As plants grow they remove nutrients from the soil. In nature these nutrients are replaced in the natural cycle of decaying organic matter. This layer of rich top-soil, which is so beneficial for our plants, is called humus.

But in our gardens we interrupt this cycle by removing unwanted organic matter when we prune and mow our lawns and disposing of dead leaves. Without replacing these nutrients we can make the soil barren and infertile to all but the hardiest plant, leading often to the use of expensive chemical fertilisers and feeds.

Gardeners have long known the value of composting. It allowed them to keep their gardens clean and it gave them a free quality feed for their plants. Now with the intoduction of bin charges across Ireland many people are also realising another simple benefit of composting – it saves you money on your bins.

Organic waste can form up to 1/3 of our weekly rubbish. This goes straight to landfill, fermenting and producing large quantities of the greenhouse gas methane.
Home composting is therefore an excellent solution to these problems, minimising our landfill waste and recycling it back into our gardens. It also saves you a lot of money

When Eco Logic delivers your compost bin our installers talk you through the do's and don'ts of composting, answering your questions and making it simple.

Grass Boxes

Many gardens will produce more grass cuttings during the summer months than can be got rid of in a garden composter. Remember though grass is a good accelerator too much of it is bad for the quality of your compost.

There is a simple solution - the Grass Box. The box is a heavy duty plastic container where you can store your grass and watch it compost itself back into the ground.

So if you don't want your grass cuttings filling your bin get a grass box.

The Grass Boxes we stock are made from 100% recycled material. They have a large top access for easy filling, and are designed, developed and manufactured in Ireland.
